Thankfully the improvement in the weather allowed a full schedule of games to go ahead at the weekend.

Juniors
The A team moved up to joint second in Premier A following their 2-0 win at home to Corbally Utd on Sunday morning. There was probably a little rustiness in the performance due to not having played too many games since the start of the year. However goals from Jake Dillon & Brian ‘Clemy’ O’Sullivan were enough to ensure the 3 points on offer were taken by Newport.

The C team suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Dromore Celtic in Rathuard on Sunday afternoon. Jordan Ryan scored Newport’s consolation goal.

U17B recorded an excellent 7-2 win at home to Herbertstown on Sunday afternoon courtesy of 4 goals from Luke Ryan and a hat-trick in 10 minutes for substitute, Johnny Ryan. The win maintains their strong position in the top half of the Div 2 table.

Next Sunday’s only scheduled fixture. Junior A, Lawson Cup, Rd 2, Newport Town AFC v Northside, 11am (Derryleigh Park).

Schoolboys
Our U12A side got their Div 1 league campaign off to a great start thanks to an excellent 6-0 win away to Lisnagry. The scorers were Ollie Roche 3, Patrick O’Shea 2 & Cormac Shanahan.

Hard luck to our U12B boys who despite a great performance were unlucky to lose 2-1 at home to Corbally. James Fahy was the Newport scorer.

The U14s put in a great display when beating Caherconlish 3-2 at home on Saturday morning. Conor Molamphy, Adam Power & James Moloney scored for Newport with Daithí Whelton putting in a man of the match performance.

Our U16 boys made it 3 wins from 3 and are co-leaders of Div 1 following their 6-1 defeat of Regional B in Dooradoyle. Diarmuid O’Riordan was the scorer-in-chief with 4 goals and Aaron Walsh scoring the other 2 with Thomas Hickey providing some great assists. Well done lads on an excellent team performance

Next Saturday’s only scheduled fixture. U15B, Div 2, Geraldines v Newport Town AFC, 11am (Rathuard).

Schoolgirls
The game between the U13 girls of Newport & Borrisokane was a very tight affair but it was Abagail Hickey who scored for Newport to record an excellent hard-fought win away from home.

The U16 girls travelled to play Ballymackey and returned home with all 3 points after an emphatic 7-0 victory. Lauren Bailey 3, Eryn Kennedy 3 & Mollie O’Hora were the Newport scorers.

Our U11 girls played their hearts out in Borrisokane on Saturday morning in their non-competitive league game. It’s great to see these young players improve with every game and play with a smile on their faces all the time.

Next Saturday’s scheduled fixtures. U14 Girls, Newport Town AFC v Borrisokane, 2pm (Derryleigh Park). U16 Girls, Newport Town AFC v Killavilla, 3.30pm (Derryleigh Park).

Lotto
There was no winner of this week’s club’s lotto and the jackpot is now €1,150 with the next draw taking place on Saturday, March 14 in Gleeson’s. The numbers drawn were 2, 18, 23 & 25. Tickets can be purchased from any committee member, in the local pubs, the Derryleigh Dugout and at our lotto stand at Ryan’s Centra on Sunday mornings. They can also be bought online via the club website. Thanks, as always, to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.

Last One Standing
And then there were just 3 left standing after round 3 at the weekend. Hard luck to Brendan O'Brien who was let down by Wolves. Well done to Ger O'Brien, John Tuohey & Thomas Williams who advance to round 4 courtesy of Liverpool's narrow 2-1 win over Bournemouth.

Corona Virus
Following guidance from the HSE & FAI, we are asking all our players to think about hygiene in light of the Corona Virus outbreak. ALL players are now asked to bring their own water bottles to training & matches. For the time being, the tradition of shaking hands with opponents & match officials pre & post-match games is also temporarily suspended. Thanks for your co-operation.

St. Patrick’s Parade
Unfortunately, due to the Corona Virus, the Newport Parade scheduled for next Saturday has been postponed. It is hoped that it will go ahead at a later date.

Nicky English Butchers
On behalf of everyone in the club, we would like to wish Nicky & Chris English of English Butchers a very happy, healthy & long retirement. Besides Nicky being a club living legend and a Hall of Famer, they have been brilliant supporters of our club and they will be greatly missed on Main St.
